One remembers when one did not exist, when one was not a number. A number of things, after all, implied more than one, so the thinking went. When One went to count, One would count a number of things, sheep, or coins, or fences. One would never count just one.

As with all thinking, this thinking was limited, bounded by a limit that could not be broken. Until it was broken, until the boundary was crossed.
